Yesterday we visited Auschwitz and Birkenau. A very moving and sobering experience. I had been once before nearly 30 years ago with far, far fewer people. It created a kind of cognitive dissonance in me, a wish to have more quiet time for reflection but a gratefulness that so many people come to witness and pay respect. I will limit myself to the words of George Santayana: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”
