Corfu Day 3

Greek salads today: 1

Greek salads so far: 2

As any poor unfortunate who ever reads this drivel knows I do have a slight tendency to rabbit on about inconsequential nonsense from time to time. OK, most of the time. So today’s rambling is about Greek salads. That is not to imply any fault with any Greek salad we have had so far, but only two salads in and the variety of ingredients is worthy of my exemplary investigative journalism. Of course I could google what is supposed to be in a standard Greek salad - but where would the fun be in that? And have I ever allowed evidence to get in the way of a good ramble - or indeed rant, but I don’t think this qualifies as a rant.

So yesterday lunchtime’s had the addition of capers to what does at least seem to be the staple of tomatoes, cucumber, green peppers, olives & feta. Which I have to say worked rather well. Personally I am a fan. But today’s … no capers, but instead red cabbage. Not so sure about that one, although to be fair the salad was still excellent, possibly because of the more generous portion of feta - and this was in the tourist hotspot of Corfu Town. Although curiously in what appeared to be the very definition of tourist spot, most of the people around us were speaking Greek (which of course could be completely inaccurate on our part, as our language skills will barely distinguish Greek from Albanian, Serbian or just about any other European language other than French). It is a Sunday of course so perhaps the locals come out today to reclaim the best restaurants from the visitors?

Anyway you can now be assured your doughty correspondent will, all in the name of research, sacrifice himself to bring you reviews of Greek salads for the remainder of this week. Today’s was also served with an excellent portion of garlic bread, which I have to say was a masterstroke. It might also account for the wide berth I am being given as I type this tripe by the hotel pool.

Right, back to the day. Rain having been forecast we had decided to spend the day in Corfu town, taking the 25 minute, €1.50 (Brighton & Hove Council take note!) bus ride in and having the option of diving into museums during thunderstorms. As it happens the sky has been basically blue all day and for once the good old BBC seems to have had a more accurate forecast than the locals - who all said it was going to rain today!

And what a great town Corfu Town is. Lots of windy streets to get completely lost in; views over the Ionian Sea; cafes by the dozen to relax in, drink beer and sip coffee (and eat Greek salad); and overall just a fabulous vibe.

The Greek/Albanian borders is over there somewhere.

Obligatory selfie, badly taken, in the aforementioned narrow streets.

Place Enoseos (I think). Every archway filled with diners! And more across the street on the edge of the park (thats where we were, noshing our Greek salad and garlic bread)

And where we saw this chappie - interesting, but hard, way to make a living. I think that is a picture of his family? And he winds it up and it plays music - and occasionally he sings along! Worth a few spare Euros!

The bus back, late afternoon, then allowed us to cool off at our hotel pool before preparing again for sundowners by the beach and dinner in another lovely little local taverna.

So before I sign off for the day, just a quick mention for the fabulous Ta Diktia beachside taverna, which fed us last night with a mixed grill I couldn’t even finish and a wonderful grilled bream that looked and tasted like it had just jumped out of the sea onto Nareesa’s plate. We will be back but probably not tonight as there are several others to try - and it would be remiss of us not to share the love! I really should have cropped out those chips!

Have I mentioned I am liking Corfu!

Oh we are so envious, looks lovely, I have just read your blog out loud to Christine as we are basking in the sun(I know I cant belive it either), minus the Greek Salad! we will be having a Spinach, Orange and bacon salad soon, plus my home grown spuds!

But we wish we were there!

we were there 40years ago on the 10th of October 1981 on our honeymoon.

Has it changed at all?
