Corfu Day 5

Greek salads today: 1

Greek salads so far: 4

Time to explore! Its all well and good this lazing around on Mediterranean beaches, with nothing to do but swim, quaff beer and eat Greek salads. There’s a whole island to explore out there and what better way than on a bike - motorised of course! Of course the salesman saw me coming, recognised a budding hells angel and rented me the big daddy of scooters - the Honda 150i. Doubtless at some inflated price! Yeah I know, not quite a Harley is it!? But I do have a biker chick (I am of course being ironic but I’ll still get a thoroughly deserved slap for that) to keep me company (instead of the grizzled old biker idiots I’m used to).

So up the east coast we went, a few hairpin bends to negotiate but nothing the “big” Honda couldn’t handle and before long we found ourselves at our first coffee stop - as any follower of this dross will attest, some things never change! Doesn’t matter who I am with, coffee is a must. It was however surprising that Nareesa ordered the 7000 calorie doughnut to go with it - accidentally she insists. Sadly no photographic record was made of this oversized ball of fat, but I can assure anyone who cares that I managed to finish the whole thing, with Nareesa getting barely a look in - she doesn’t really do chocolate! And the coffee was good!

Again, it will surprise nobody that by this time we had gone all of about 10 miles - maybe less! So it was time to press on. We had set ourself a target of Kassiopi (for no obvious reason), on the North coast as our destination for our Greek salad of the day.

Turns out to be a lot prettier than the village we are staying in, with lots of tavernas, grouped around the attractive harbour. Fishing boats and speed boats bobbing on the calm Mediterranean water, vying for your attention - either eat my catch or be dragged along at hair-raising speeds, in order to work up an appetite, so you can … you get the picture.

Lots of English voices here and I can see why it is popular, but it definitely felt less local than where we are staying. You pays your money, you takes your choice.

So what of the Greek salad? One massive lump of feta covering the usual mixture of peppers, tomatoes etc. And I admit, oregano, so I am thinking that is a staple. Do you care? No, of course you don’t! Not the best one we have had but still good and on this occasion accompanied by just about the freshest calamari we have ever had. In a batter so light it was almost a calamari tempura! Fabulous. And after the chocolate doughnut, probably a mistake! But things were to get worse.

On our way back down the coast, on being stuck behind a commercial truck, and without the power to even think about overtaking, we diverted down a lane to Agni Beach, where we found an ice cream store just begging to be patronised. So we did. At current rate of ingestion, I will need to book an additional seat on the flight home! Its serious business this ice cream eating!

And so another fabulous day draws to a close. Well the afternoon does - sundowners and dinner to follow. Oh dear!

We have had some magnificent views, had biker fun on the quiet roads, eaten in some lovely restaurants and found some gorgeous fishing villages. What’s not to like! Somehow we failed to get in the sea today. We will rectify the tomorrow.

Have I mentioned I like Corfu?! Last few shots...
