Icy by name, icy by nature

Icy Bay. Wonder why it is called that?

The confluence of three massive glaciers has created a huge bay full of icebergs, which I now understand have names! The smallest ones, roughly up to the size of a beach ball are called growlers, medium sized ones are bergy bits (yes, really - roughly from a beach ball to a house), and the biggest ones are called … well, icebergs!

The things you learn on a trip like this! Of course it is entirely possible I have that all wrong as I was only half listening to our zodiac driver. I was too busy marvelling at the amazing scenery.

So, Icy Bay … we sailed in around 2pm having spent much of the last 24 hours at sea from Sitka. Parked up (technical term) for about 4 or 5 hours we basically took it in turns to be whisked around the bay by zodiac getting up close and personal with the bergs. Some hardy folk took out the kayaks but to me that just meant less time to look, gaze and wonder. The fog hanging above the bergs was just magical.

I’ve got very little else to say about Icy Bay. It was beautiful. That will have to do. For once let the pictures do the work. So here they are, a selection, mostly captured from a moving zodiac boat so apologies for the occasional wonkiness!

Missed it, just.

Me demonstrating an eskimo roll (anyone who believes that is mad). Can you still call it that?

Entering the bay

A dirty berg (gravel and rock from the glacier).

Bergy bits and growlers

Are we having fun yet?

Saying goodbye to Icy Bay as the sun goes down.
