Time to head south ... State no. 2 (unless you count BC, which is a province, in which case it is 3)

Mostly a travel day today, but with a few stops along the way, from Washington to Oregon. Not much to say so I shall (mostly) keep my trap shut. Saw quite a few wind turbines - a metaphor for my blog?

Beyond the mountains of Leavenworth we encountered what appears to be semi-desert. Dry plains, with the moisture sucked away by the hills, but apparently fertile land even if it has to be irrigated. Lots of farms anyway. And it seems lots of fruit and wineries. Perhaps we should have stopped more often!

We've just arrived in Portland, across the border into Oregon, to catch up with more old friends, Iain and Sue from Nareesa's Stirling University days (well, Iain that is). Pictures to follow tomorrow as long as it doesn't get too messy - they haven't seen each other for a while!

Two stops today of note. The first in Goldendale, which is anything but golden these days. Our attempt to find a cafe for a quick lunch found only The Honkytonk Bar & Restaurant. The picture of the guns on the outside put us off and the inside only confirmed our worries. We didn't stay! Goldendale has seen better times but is probably quite representative of similar sized American rural towns. We would have loved to find a local cafe serving (oversized) lunches but it wasn't to be today.

Half an hour later we rolled into Dalles (might be pronounced the same as the one in Texas, but maybe not), and found a coffee shop that produced a breakfast burrito the size of my forearm. I managed not to eat it all!

Not much vegetarian on the menu. Maybe we should have guessed from the name!

The other stop of note, just short of Portland was the rather magnificent Multnomah Falls, roughly 160m of directly cascading water in the Columbia River Gorge. Rather impressive. Of course more important to get the silly selfie than the falls!

And we had only 5 minute previously been impressed with the Horseshoe Falls - puny by comparison.

So to sign off here are the full Multnomah Falls. Pretty impressive. All 611 feet of them. Or about 200m for the rest of the world.

Apologies, a bit rushed tonight. We are due out ... The weekend might bring more of the same.
